Isaac Shelby papers, 1795-1922 1795-1826.

This collection consists of twenty-two items, dated 1795-1922, including letters, certificates, a will, and executive orders associated with Isaac Shelby. While some of the documents are originals, most are photocopies. Some of the photocopies deal with Shelby's role in the Revolutionary War, especially at the Battle of King's Mountain. Other papers concern Shelby's raising troops for the War of 1812, assisting a fellow veteran of the Revolution apply for compensation, and organizing his accounts. Of particular interest, especially to genealogists, is Shelby's last will and testament. Names represented in the collection are William McDowell, George Thompson, Adam Cooper, William Roane, Charles Depauw, Robert T. Walker, N. Russell, General Green, Green Clay, William H. Harrison, C.S. Todd, John Pratt, Langdon Cheves, and G.R.C. Floyd.

Isaac Shelby, Kentucky's first governor, was born in Maryland in 1750. As a young man, he served in Lord Dunmore's War and the Revolutionary War, from which he emerge as one of the heroes of the Battle of King's Mountain, South Carolina. Following the war, he and his bride, Susannah Hart, moved to Lincoln County, Kentucky, where he quickly became a leader in Kentucky politics.
